GEOGRAPHY / SAILING / CULTURE
Summer sailing in the Cyclades means contending with the Meltemi, a northerly to north-easterly wind that can exceed 30 knots and blow for several consecutive days. Wind acceleration through the channels between islands can produce short, steep seas, making passage planning and the choice of shelter essential.
Greek-style mooring is characteristic of the area: the anchor is dropped and stern lines are taken ashore to the quay, a manoeuvre demanding precision and crew coordination.
